I was initially reluctant to investigate the other packages as I was happy using N6 and felt that I would be wasting precious time by looking at alternatives. I spent some time doing this myself a couple years ago when presenting a session on qualitative analysis tools (which I hope was less biased than the one you attended this morning!) and found it an incredibly useful exercise.
#Nvivo versus hyperresearch free
If you’re worried about being asked this question I’d highly recommend taking a quick look at some of the other packages (nearly all of them have free demonstration versions). I usually also like to discuss why my personal preference is for N6, and why it suits the type of data I deal with. Along with this, we provide the class with the URL for the CAQDAS website - and encourage them to visit this site and make their own minds up. Both myself and a colleague that I work with, Jens Hansen, always point out in the early stages of a workshop that while our preference is for the QSR software, they are not the only packages available. In some ways I wish I was asked it more often as it would show that my students were thinking critically! I suspect however, that the reason I’m rarely asked this is that I pre-empt the question in the beginning of each workshop. Surprisingly, I very rarely get asked this question in the workshops I teach.
